Kathryn attended the Steppenwolf Theater School in Chicago and performed in community theatres located around Northern Illinois while she was there. She supported her family by hanging wallpaper and painting the mansions of Lake Forest by day, working as a sales representative for a firm that manufactured Welcome Wagons, and making use of her connections to book film and print settings in the homes that she was painting. During the evenings, Kathryn worked on enhancing her abilities and transitioning from performing in community theatre to semi-professional theatre. The year 1991 marked the beginning of her career. Disney sponsored an open audition for anybody interested in working as street entertainers at Disney World.
