Though the circumstances of Helen Holmes’ birth are somewhat hazy (sources place it in either Chicago or Louisville, KY, in mid-June or early July of 1893), what isn’t hazy is that she was, with Pearl White, the queen of the railroad serials of the mid-teens and early ’20s. Holmes always portrayed a strong-willed, independent, and resourceful heroine. She was just as capable of rushing after, hopping on, and stopping a runaway train as she was of battling her eyes at the male “hero.” She went to a convent school, but her parents were so impoverished that they could hardly afford to send her there. As she became older, she began modelling for photographers in order to contribute to the financial support of her family. Because of her brother’s health problems, the family had to relocate from the chilly and wet temperature of Chicago to the scorching and arid environment of Death Valley in California. There, she was able to indulge her penchant for exciting experiences to the fullest. She spent some of her time in that lonely and poorly inhabited territory living with a local Indian tribe while also working as a gold prospector. However, her brother passed away not long after, and the following year, in 1910, Helen relocated to New York and started performing in plays in the area. She had developed a friendship with the famous actress Mabel Normand, and after a brief period of contact between the two, Normand encouraged her to visit Hollywood, where she helped her friend find modelling and acting jobs. Soon after, Holmes attained fame, and by 1913, she was appearing in her own films that she had directed. She was playing in the serial The Hazards of Helen (1914) at Kalem Studios when she met her future husband, the director J.P. McGowan. He was directing the serial at the same time. The two quickly established their own film production firm, and both their serials and feature films went on to enjoy tremendous success. In spite of this, Mutual Films, the corporation that was responsible for the distribution of their films, failed by 1919. Without Mutual’s financial backing the budgets on their films shrank precipitously, and not being able to afford to make railroad serials anymore, Helen was now turned into a newspaperwoman, a switch that did not sit well with her fans. Although she continued to make films and serials, many of them weren’t starring roles anymore, and the fact that a good percentage of them were for the cheap independent market meant that relatively few audiences actually saw them. 1925 was the year when her marriage to McGowan ended in divorce. She subsequently married a movie stuntman, and basically retired from the screen in 1926, although she made a few appearances in small parts over the next 20 years. She kept her hand in the business by becoming a trainer for animals used in the movies, but that lasted until her husband died in 1946. Her health had been deteriorating for several years by that time, and she died of a heart attack in 1950. Helen Holmes was born on June 19, 1893 in Chicago, United States.
