Fredi Washington was a trailblazing African-American actress whose light complexion and green eyes were often obstacles in the way of her showcasing her outstanding acting abilities. Washington was a pioneer in the field. Because of people’s preoccupation with her ethnicity and colour, her abilities were often neglected. She only appeared in a handful of films, yet even in those roles, her immense acting skill was impossible to miss. Her debut in the film industry came in the role of a dancer in the 1929 musical short “Black and Tan Fantasy,” which was co-starring Duke Ellington. When she arrived in Hollywood, studio executives told her that if she could “pass” as entirely white, they would make her a larger celebrity than Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Constance Bennett, and Greta Garbo combined. This prompted her to attempt to “pass” as fully white. Fredi did not give in. Her performance as the original Peola in the film Imitation of Life is perhaps what brought her the most notoriety (1934). She had a role with Paul Robeson in the 1933 film The Emperor Jones, as well as in a few more movies with her skin tone altered. Her most acclaimed performances were on stage, most notably with Ethel Waters in “Mamba’s Daughters.” Because Fredi did not have a “black” enough appearance, she was never able to achieve the same level of success as her contemporaries Waters, Josephine Baker, and Nina Mae McKinney. But Fredi had what it required, as is more than clear in the few films that she did make, and this is more than evident in the films that she did do. Her work as an activist was her most notable achievement. She served as the leader of the Negro Actors Guild, an organisation that worked to ensure that black artists were given equal opportunities in the entertainment business. In contrast to the majority of people living during her historical period, maybe others who come across her art in the future will be able to see beyond the colour of her skin and appreciate her for the beauty and ability that she has.
