Her performance as the original Peola in the film Imitation of Life is perhaps what brought her the most notoriety (1934). She had a role with Paul Robeson in the 1933 film The Emperor Jones, as well as in a few more movies with her skin tone altered. Her most acclaimed performances were on stage, most notably with Ethel Waters in “Mamba’s Daughters.” Because Fredi did not have a “black” enough appearance, she was never able to achieve the same level of success as her contemporaries Waters, Josephine Baker, and Nina Mae McKinney. She served as the leader of the Negro Actors Guild, an organisation that worked to ensure that black artists were given equal opportunities in the entertainment business.
