Freda Jackson was the daughter of a railway porter when she was born in Nottingham, England in 1908. Her father worked for the railway. After completing her education at High Pavement School and the University College located nearby, she went on to become a schoolteacher. However, she left that profession behind in order to enrol in the Acting programme at the Royal College of Art in London. In 1934, she made her debut on the professional stage in Northampton, England, and two years later, in 1936, she moved on to perform in London’s West End. In 1938, she became a member of the esteemed Old Vic company and went on tour with them across Europe and Egypt. In 1940, she gave a performance of Shakespeare in Stratford on Avon; nevertheless, it wasn’t until 1945 that she became famous for her role in the London production of “No Room at the Inn.” After she achieved this level of popularity, she went on to portray several leading parts in other productions. Over the course of her career, Freda Jackson played around sixty-two prominent theatre roles in England and other countries. At the same time, she had roles in twenty-six films, some of which include “Henry V,” which was directed by Sir Laurence Olivier, “Great Expectations,” which was adapted by David Lean, “Tom Jones,” which was directed by Tony Richardson, and the classic horror film “Brides of Dracula,” which was directed by Hammer. Not happy with this, she has featured in a number of famous British television programmes, such as Maigret, Adam Adamant Lives, and Blake’s 7, in addition to a number of more serious dramas.
