Barbara Eva Novak was one of a bevy of beautiful women who was able to turn her pure and innocent good looks into a successful profession. She was born on Valentine’s Day in St. Louis, Missouri in the year 1898. Eva Novak was the daughter of Joseph Novak, a Bohemian immigrant, and Barbara Novak. She started her career in the entertainment industry as a Mack Sennett Bathing Beauty and made her comedic debut for the L-KO Company in the short comedies Roped Into Scandal (1917) and Hearts and Flour (1917). Two years later, she moved up to starring roles in full-length motion pictures and was paired with Tom Mix in a variety of westerns, including The Speed Maniac (1919), The Feud (1919), The Daredevil (1920), Desert Love (1920), The Rough Diamond (1921), Trailin’ (1921), Sky High (1922), and Chasing the Moon (1922). (1922). She also had roles alongside cowboy hero William S. Hart in a few of his rough-and-tumble oaters. In a succession of delightful comedies and dramas, she was periodically given the opportunity to display a greater degree of range. She was quite good at it until 1921, when she married William Reed (1894-1944), an assistant director and stuntman of his own, who insisted that she stop the dangerous tricks. It was cowboy star Mix who taught the agile Novak how to perform her own stunts in those western adventures, and she proved quite good at it. As sound technology advanced, Eva’s fame began to decline, and she was eventually forced to finish out her career in Australia with her husband. She continued to make appearances on cinema and television from time to time, but these were almost exclusively in small, uncredited character roles until the late 1960s, when she finally retired for good. At the age of 90, Eva passed away in Woodland Hills, California, from complications related to pneumonia. Jane Novak, the older sister, also had a successful career in the silent cinema industry.
