During the 1970s, this attractive native of Los Angeles, who was born with blue eyes, had a short but brilliant career on television. Her family has been firmly rooted in the Golden State for the last five generations, beginning with her ancestors. They were one of the richest families in the world until they sold off large real estate holdings in Encino and Beverly Hills. In the end, they failed to predict the approaching boom in the real estate market. One of her ancestors, a great grandmother, was a pioneer settler in the San Fernando Valley. She was originally from the Basque region of France and was one of the first people to establish in that area. Jack Baur, Elizabeth’s father, worked for 20th Century Fox for a number of years as a casting director. He fiercely disapproved of his daughter’s objectives and gave little to no assistance in establishing her in the acting business. He may have been overprotective since he had been on the inside of a harsh and competitive profession for many years. Elizabeth, who at the time was determined to become a “cow girl” in westerns, stayed undaunted by the lack of formal theatre instruction at her high school and made her cinematic debut in a corn flakes commercial with Jimmy Durante. Later on, she attended the Estelle Harman Actor’s Workshop in order to hone her acting skills. After that, she continued her education at Los Angeles Valley College in order to get a degree in theatrical arts. After that, she took a risky step and enrolled in a talent training programme at the recording studio that belonged to her father. This eventually resulted in a contract for a shorter period of time. She debuted in small parts in the films Batman (1966) and The Boston Strangler (1968) before obtaining a regular role as a rancher’s (Andrew Duggan’s) ward in the television series Lancer (1968), which was produced by CBS. The show aired for a total of 51 episodes, but it was ultimately unsuccessful because it was too thematically like to NBC’s longer-running and more well-liked Bonanza (1959). It would seem that Elizabeth did not find the work she performed on Lancer to be particularly difficult, since she was still able to appear as a guest on other television series and pursue her favourite hobbies, which included both golfing and painting. She was evidently extremely skilled at both of these activities. In 1971, she triumphed over one hundred other aspirants competing for the position of Officer Fran Belding in the television programme Ironside (1967). She was cast in the role to replace Barbara Anderson, who had left the show after the fourth season. This was the high point of her career. She was “thrilled” to receive the job, which she subsequently characterised as being her most demanding role, and she used her own words to explain how she felt. Elizabeth went on to play her likable, down-to-earth character in 89 episodes. After several years of relative inactivity she made her screen swansong in the made-for-TV movie The Return of Ironside (1993).
