Dorothy, who was born in Dickinson, North Dakota, attended acting classes in Minneapolis after moving there to pursue her career. After performing in summer stock and vaudeville for a number of years, she made her debut on Broadway in 1926 in the play “The Squall,” and she became famous for a role she played in the play. Her father, Victor Hugo Stickney, was a physician who travelled from patient to patient on horseback. He was one of the first ten people to be inducted into the National Cowboy Hall of Fame. She was a member of the “Southern Belles,” a group of four singers and dancers who performed in vaudeville. She studied at the North Western Dramatic School in Minneapolis. In the 1920s, when she first moved to New York, she had trouble finding acting jobs, which prompted her to pen the poem “You’re Not the Type,” which was later published in Liberty magazine. Her first performance on Broadway was a tiny part in 1926’s production of “The Squall,” and after that she often performed character parts as eccentrics. She originated the part of Mollie Molloy, the character who leaps out of the window, in the play “The first page of content. Other plays that were performed were “On Borrowed Time,” “Chicago,” and “Another Language.” A Day in the Life With Dad, “authored by her husband, was rejected by everyone (including Lunt and Fontanne), so she and Howard performed the roles in summer stock until they were eventually able to bring it to Broadway’s Empire Theater on November 8, 1939. After seven years and 3,224 performances, it finally came to an end, making it the non-musical with the longest run on Broadway. They brought two rescued orchestra seats from the Empire into their East Side townhouse after it was dismantled, and she passed away there at the age of 101.
