Dominique Dunne was born in Santa Monica, California, the daughter of producer, actor, and writer Dominick Dunne and Ellen Beatriz Griffin Dunne. Griffin Dunne, an actor, is her brother. Following her parents’ divorce, she relocated to New York, then to a posh home in Beverly Hills. Dominique attended the University of Colorado to study acting after graduating from high school, but left after one year to pursue her career. She landed her first job in Hollywood three weeks after arriving. Other roles soon followed, most notably as Dana Freeling, the eldest daughter in Poltergeist (1982), and Dominique quickly became well known in the Hollywood social scene. Dominique appeared to be on top of the world, beloved by all who knew her. Then she met John Thomas Sweeney, the chef at popular LA nightclub “Ma Maison,” at a party. The two began a relationship, which quickly turned sour. Sweeney was uncontrollable and abusive (to the point where Dominique didn’t need makeup to play an abuse victim in Hill Street Blues (1981)). Dominique called it quits on the relationship on October 30, 1982. Sweeney, distraught, raced to her house, where she and actor David Packer were rehearsing a scene from V (1983), dragged her outside, and strangled her, leaving her brain-dead. Five days later, she was taken off life support and died, ending a brilliant career and leaving a slew of shocked and angry loved ones behind.
