While studying at Kenyon College, Janney answered a casting call for an on-campus production that was to be directed by Kenyon’s most renowned graduate, the famed actor Paul Newman. During her audition/interview, Janney played off Newman’s known penchant for racing car driving – she recounted how she saved thirty minutes off of the 130 mile travel from her home town to the college. She was picked for the play’s cast. After receiving her degree in theatre, Janney followed Joanne Woodward’s recommendation to continue additional study at New York’s Neighborhood Playhouse. She performed in Noel Coward’s “Present Laughter” with Frank Langella, which garnered her the Outer Critics Circle Award and an Actors’ Equity award. Janney also performed in the New York Shakespeare Festival’s performance of “The Taming of the Shrew”. In 1999 Janney became part of the original cast of the renowned TV series The West Wing (1999) where she portrayed the President’s press secretary who later gets elevated to the White House Chief of Staff. Her remarkable performance over the seven seasons of that legendary series garnered her four Emmys and two SAG Awards. Because of her work on “The West Wing,” Janney was able to win more substantial roles in feature films, such as in the critically acclaimed film “The Hours” (2002), in which she played Meryl Streep’s lesbian lover, and in “How to Deal” (2003), in which she played Mandy Moore’s mother.
