    A childhood interest in aviation

    Flights between Boston and North Carolina helped spark her curiosity about aircraft. Adams later told the Boston Globe that seeing another Black pilot made the possibility of that career feel real.[4][5]

    She first studied engineering at Purdue before moving to Washington. After continuing her studies at the University of Washington, she transferred to Central Washington University and graduated in 1996.[4]

    Building experience as a pilot

    Adams worked as a flight instructor and became a Raytheon Aircraft Company demonstration pilot in 1999. She subsequently flew for Flight Options before joining Continental Airlines in 2006.[4]
