Wilson was accustomed to working in remote places for a mining company. Before filming, he researched edible plants and watched survival programmes, although he later said much of that preparation did not match the problems the group faced.[1]
He made portable lighting using batteries and switches. Wilson told Channel 4 that the group used the lights every night, and that solving technical problems helped him find a clear purpose in camp.[1]
He described becoming close to people he had initially struggled to understand. The arrival of a rival camp changed the pace, with finding supplies quickly becoming more urgent than exploring the town at leisure.[1]
Wilson said the show helped him speak up when a problem mattered.[1]
He also changed a small daily routine: after having to grind beans and boil water in camp, he began taking time to sit and enjoy coffee at home.[1]
