In an interview with The Things, Kelly explained that the move to Puerto Rico came after a hurricane damaged his wife’s family farm in 2022. The couple had been living in Florida and travelled to help with the recovery. They stayed, and farming became part of the life he described before entering Survivor.[4]
Kelly saw some practical preparation for Fiji in that experience. He told the interviewer that he had become accustomed to heat, outdoor work and interruptions to everyday comforts. Moving from Ireland to Puerto Rico had initially been a difficult adjustment, but he believed learning to remain comfortable in unfamiliar conditions could help him on the island.[4]
His interest in Survivor also grew through its fan community. Kelly said that discovering the show after moving to America gave him a way to connect when he knew few people.[3]
He did not present himself as someone who had studied every season. Instead, his pre-season interviews emphasized enjoying the experience and being willing to take risks. He suggested that visibly imperfect play could sometimes be useful when other contestants were carefully hiding their intentions.[3]
