Powell described being used to situations changing with very little warning. She expected remaining calm, assessing risks quickly and helping in a medical emergency to be skills she could offer the group.[1]
Before joining the ambulance service, Powell worked at a zoo, a veterinary practice and a farm. That experience made her comfortable when the Apocalypse participants had to deal with animals around their camp.[1]
Her first response to the setting was to scan for hazards and safe areas. The damaged buildings and scattered vehicles made the town feel unsettling, even to someone experienced at assessing difficult scenes.[1]
Powell valued conversations with people whose working lives were very different from her own.[1]
She said discussing exhaustion with the others helped when the experience became difficult. Her reflections focused on mutual support and the everyday infrastructure people depend on.[1]
