Watkins described creating immersive experiences for a living in his September 2026 Channel 4 interview. The abandoned town initially struck him as an extraordinary piece of theatre, although its size and unfamiliar buildings also made it intimidating.[1]
He went into the show expecting his versatility with practical jobs to be useful.[1]
Before filming, he watched survival videos and tried out new skills, finding that a quick demonstration was easier to follow than to reproduce.[1]
Watkins found group relationships difficult when everyone was hungry. He described the camp developing family-like roles rather than a formal leadership structure, with humour helping people care for one another.[1]
After discovering another group in the town, Watkins favoured a more cooperative approach. He later reflected on how uncertainty about food could turn even small decisions about sharing supplies into a source of tension.[1]
