Growing up in California
Mekus spent his early years in Tracy before his family moved to Coronado near San Diego. In his YSBnow interview, he recalled travelling from there to Los Angeles for auditions while still in middle school.[1]

Early short-film experience
Acting classes led to short films. He singled out the New York Film Academy project Chocolate Chip Cookie as an important early experience, saying its two-week shoot confirmed that he wanted to continue acting.[1]
